Coming into this English class, I was
telling my self, damn here goes another semester of learning the same old
academic writing I was taught every year. I also told myself that I would have
to do countless papers everyday and write essays about articles or readings. My
mindset was so far from what this class is actually is.
Instructor Field has designed this
class to be focused on the students. I wouldn’t necessary say she doesn't care
about the curriculum, but she sure does care about the students. This class has
opened my mind in so many aspects. By learning about things I have never heard
before, such as Invisible Narratives. Invisible Narratives has made me
think not two times but three times about people, media, books, and etc.
The concept of Invisible Narratives has taught me that there are always stories
behind something. I have never thought about something for so long until I
learned about Invisible Narratives. An example is the article “The High Cost of Zero Cost”, which is about how the word free can change people’s decisions in a
crazy way. We all have accustomed to this invisible narrative that, if we see
free some where, we as people are more likely to interact with the object that
has free on it. This was really
mind blowing because I would have never thought about that in the first place,
and when I found out, I was like what the f***, that’s crazy!
Although, I have now recognized that
the word free has been over powering my mind, I now also know more about how
science uses Invisible Narratives as well. An example, is the article “The Egg and Sperm”, where it talks about how sperm which is from males, are more
dominant in many manners. This resembles that there are still stereotypical
statements in science and biology. This also amazed me as well. I have been
learning about science for so long and I am now realizing that females are
still shown to be weaker than men literally everywhere. I definitely would
disagree with that as well. I feel like men should have the up most respect for
women because they are so damn strong. They go through crazy stuff to get
through life.
To follow up on my statement on how I
feel like men should have more respect for women, another thing I like about
this class is that it gets real debatable. I got to get some more knowledge on
how females think about us men. It’s nothing bad too! I definitely learned to
get more respect for females as well. I always had respect for females, but
this class has definitely made me understand more about how females think.
Lastly, this class and the
assignments of learning about discourses, has actually helped me excel in my
writing. Especially when we focus more on our discourses, it prepares me for
what is in store. I know it’s only a small stepping-stone, but at least I’m
starting. Overall my ability to write and understand society has exceeded past
the limit I ever thought of, by the class, the assignments, and the teacher.
I like your post and I agree with all the points your brought up about this class. I also really like to hear different perspectives and opinions about the same topic through our class discussions. Many of our classmates bring up situations and ideas that I would not have thought of.
