Reflection (Blog Post 4)

In the very beginning of the semester my diagnostics essay mostly described of my own personality that has been influenced by my own personal experience of being polite and courteous towards other people. As a result I came to a belief that kindness and politeness is the most important trait in my life. The idea that I carry inside of me is that being polite and courteous towards others will allow me to meet new people, open many new pathways in life, gain respect, face hardships, and have friends that would accept me.

This shaped my assumption and ideologies that by being kind and courteous to people that I can get almost anything I want in life and caused me to be judgmental that if other people are not as kind as me then they will have many problems coming in their way. In order to lessen these kinds of invisible narratives I have on others, I believe that I should get to know the person much better before making these assumptions up in my head. Also I should try to see the world in their own perspective and understand that the person might be happy without always having to be kind and courteous towards everyone. By doing this will allow me to be more open as I head out into the sociology field where I study about the society and the people.

My editorial talked about the California drought and that the drought was caused by global warming and that we need to fight global warming. My parody essay poked fun at the concept of race. My third essay mostly talked about how more gun control is needed.

All of my essays have shaped my assumptions and ideas of the problems of the drought and gun control in a one sided way supporting a solution that is leaning towards the liberal side. This has caused me to have ideas that the liberal side is always right and that the conservative side is never right. I can try to lessen this idea and the impact of the narratives I convey in the essays I have written by trying to tell people that they should be open about other points of view and not just liberal views. I will tell other people that the essays I have written is based on my point of view and does not necessarily describe much of another person`s point of view. Also in the future when I write my essays I will make sure to include both sides of liberal and conservative views to avoid being bias towards one side. This can help me see different pathways as I learn about the choices that people make that shapes the society through sociology.

Also as I poked fun at the idea of race I am showing that the idea of race is silly and how funny race actually is. In order to lessen the impacts of having people misunderstand my idea that I am saying that race is not a serious issue in America, I need to choose my words carefully as I write in a way that conveys the right message of what I want the audience to see. In addition I can also tell people that although the invisible narrative in my essay is supposed to be a funny idea about race, the whole concept is not to show that race is not a serious issue in America but that the creation of race is meaningless and silly. By doing this I can convey my message better as sociologists tend to talk about controversial issues and need to be careful in what message they are trying to send out.

Overall these writings and invisible narratives or ideas have made me learn that I am a person who is very liberal and I like to shed light on controversial issues. Also I have also learned that I am a person that always wants to do the right thing as the stance in my paper is always leaning towards the liberal side. I always want to do things that help people not hurt them even more. I have also learned that I am a person who prefers to help people the most as I seem to enjoy doing so as reflected in my ideas.

  1. I would like to shed light on controversial issues as well. I am more motivated to educate my family and friends about invisible narratives also. You have a relatable post. I suspect that many people want to help people as well. I feel like a lot of people refer that. But, i do dig what you are talkin about how race is silly. great post!

  2. You did a good job reflecting on your writing throughout this semester, and I like how you included a way to lessen every invisible narrative that you found in your writing. I also think it is a good idea to give both the liberal and conservative arguments awareness, but make sure you know what side you stand.
