Are
you who you really want to be? Or are you what they want you to be?
Society a part of a community that is a unit distinguishable by particular
aims or standards of living or conduct: a social circle or a group of
social circles having a clearly marked identity.
What
you just read is a definition by a world dictionary that writes definitions
according to how we society define or represent a word. That definition is
clearly and incredibly acceptable to anyone who doesn’t pay attention to what
is basically happening around them. It clearly states how humans, have a
society kind of group to follow or to get used to. The definition does not
mention or states the word a self define person, or an individual who depends
on his or her own beliefs, instead it says a group of people meaning one
follows the other and they all try to act the same.
In
the U.S we live in a type of society that is very diverse however, we all try
to fit in what the dominant groups call the American culture. Humans can be
very smart but when it comes to make choices on our own, we become very vulnerable.
Sociology is the study of structure and the development
of human society and the interactions within it. Sociologist clearly states
that humans are influenced by what is around them, consciously or unconsciously.
All
of us interact with society on a daily basis, at work, school, parties,
everywhere even at the house with our own families and technology. My point
with this is that everything we do is influenced by society, up to the point
where we don’t act according to what we want or need, but according to what is
presented to us and what is around us. Now a days we are not who we really want
to be, we are not who we really are, we basically are and act according to
society. At the same time is a trend which means since we are part of a society
we make others be part of it too, and we pull each other into it. I believe
there are three factors that influence in this issue.
Thinking is a dominant
factor of this issue. We as humans don’t actually think by ourselves. We might
physically think alone, however our thoughts are influenced by society and they
also become constructed by society. If I were to involved some biological
science in here, I understand that we are able to think by the genes that are
inherited from our parents which means thoughts and ideas come through them
too, and their thoughts come from other genes but also from what they have
gather from society.
Another dominant factor
of the issue is physical actions, how we move, how we walk, how we run, how we
use tools are all physical actions that are influence by society we learn all
of this as we are growing up by looking at others not only at our homes but
also outside of it. An example is when
we start working at some place we are train on how to do things, they influence
our way of physically acting. Now a day’s even the way teenagers dance is
influence by society and it spreads out by media, for example the tweaking
dance, the Shmoney dance, everyone is trying to dance like that and we forget
who we really are, and even we don’t realize if we even like it or no.
Last factor is unconscious
actions. Society has a lot to do with this. Our emotions and unconscious actions are determined
by our interactions with others. For example, the way we sleep, how, when and where.
The norm of sleeping is all determine by society by some unconscious actions we
know we have to sleep at night that is what is normal. We wake up and we know
we have to be aware during the day, it is impossible to change this because
your body and your brains knows what to do already without thinking it twice or
doubting about it. If we try doing the opposite it won’t work because society
is so big and you unconsciously would just give up.
In addition, society
has manipulated us to a point where we are unable to change some of the things
in our lives. And it keeps working on us that way. The way we dress, the way we
act, the way we think, the way we unconsciously act, the way we eat, the fact
that we know when to do things like sleep, shower, the fact that we know we
have to dress certain ways depending of the occasion and even the fact that we
have to fit in certain groups in side society. All of this is what drives our
daily lives. I believe we need to change this, am not saying some of the things
are bad, no indeed some of them organize our lives, however others don’t and we
need to be more aware of that by paying attention to our actions and double
thinking on yourself and not others. Just stop for a minute after you read this
and ask yourself some questions
Are you who you really
want to be? Would you like to change some things? And if yes, what would happen
if you do so? Please be realistic and honest.

You offer a lot of definitions here, but you never really link "not being who I want to be" to those definitions. Also, you are very academic- is that your most authentic writing voice?
ReplyDeleteI really like your post. I totally agree with you, the invisable narrative of this is the society controls or tell us who we are supposed to be in order to be accepted into society.
ReplyDeleteI also like it how you give your own ponion in this topic. And then again, It is good to be different because you are being you. Not a person that society wants you to be. Like how are you supposed to love yourself if you are not being true to your self. Be yourself, be you, do you! Be unique!
