Open Eyes-Lesson

What is an Invisible Narrative? The meaning of an invisible narrative to me is The True Meaning Behind the Story.

Learning about Invisible Narratives this semester is a life-changing lesson.  I mean; I already knew that newspapers, magazines and certain shows and movies have a lot of invisible narratives. But learning more and analyzing more in deep certain articles just made me realized even more that society has set every person up to an invisible narrative. For example, the article that Yahoo published when there was a natural disaster and two families but different race were trying to survive took food from a supermarket. The words Yahoo used were “Looters and Finding”. The “Looters” was used to describe the African American family who found food. In the other hand, “Finding” was referring to the American family. It was the same situation but the use of words made everything change. This invisible narrative has always been a problem in society because non-white people have always been portrayed as criminal, lazy, dirty, uneducated, poor, etc.

I have to say been able to attend to college is an open eye experience. For example, I like watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians because I found it funny and entertaining all the stuff they do. But now that I am in college I realized that this Reality TV show has so many Invisible Narratives that just makes me wonder if the Kardashians are aware of? Making low income people feel worthless, teaching young women that they are supposed to be a certain body shape. Also, that they have to be pretty in order to be accepted in society. These kinds of TV shows are so discussing that I question why are they still on air?
Overall, it is just sad that the United States has always oppressed other people who are non-white. But, now that times have change it is not like back then, yet non-white people are still put down through Invisible Narratives. There just won’t be any moving forward if these kind things keep happening.

  1. I agree with you. I think invisible narrative has helped us see the real meaning behind a people's work and stories. As well, is sad how the U.S. are always oppressing the people of color and try to categorize them as "bad" people.

  2. This blog post is real intriguing because of the eye capturing title and visuals. I love how you expressed the meaning of invisible narratives and implied strong examples. I liked how you incorporated The Kardashians as well, because thats exactly how I think that the show is trying to resemble what girls or people should be.

  4. I also believe that learning about invisible narratives was an eye opening experience for me. I realized a lot of back stories behind television shows and news articles after learning about invisible narratives. I also agree with you that the Kardashian show expresses many invisible narratives. I liked how you pointed out that non-white people are still being put down even though many say racism does not exist anymore.
