What is Society Teaching us?

I can definitely say that this class has made think about many things. I have learned to see other people’s perspectives and still be very open minded with out judging. From the article that opened our eyes that words can play a huge part in the actions we take. By that I am referring to Ariely’s article “The high cost of Zero.” She mainly focused on how us as human beings get easily distracted by the word “Free.” We think that we are getting extra stuff because we buy one and get another thing free. But the invisible narrative there is that at the end we end up getting stuff that we don’t need. For example it has happened to me before, I remember asking my mom to take me to Costco with her the next weekend because I was looking forward to buying this new expensive shampoo that my mom wouldn’t buy because of the price but I had saved up money. So I go my mom goes into other isles and when I get there I see a shampoo packet next to the one I wanted that was cheaper aside of that it came with a free conditioner.  I was convinced that I was going to buy it. After a week or so I still wanted the other shampoo because even though had gotten a free conditioner that wasn’t the reason why I went to Costco for. I had to save money all over again and wait until I would finish the one I bought.

Invisible narratives doesn’t only have me thinking about how words play important role but also how textbooks, films and how society project the male and female role. We all think that its right to think that men are suppose to be the strong ones and the women the weak ones in need of protection by men.  We don’t only see this through our past history when women couldn’t vote but in our present as well. What got me really upset is to see how society even changes the roles in the books just so that it can project what society wants. For example the article we read about how they change the lock and key. How it was supposedly saying that sperm was the strong one because of its tail and that the egg is the weak one. After researched was being done they saw that the invisible narrative there was that it was the other way around but they don’t want to project that to us.

  1. I agree with on the issue of the word "free", we sometimes believe that getting something for free is always the best answer only because you are no paying anything, but at the end of the day things that are free are usually cheap and don't work very well and companies try to give them away because they are not making any profit from them. But companies are very smart because they know that if you buy the cheap product that gives you something for free and later you don't like it, they know that you will be coming back to buy what you really wanted in the first place. Leaving the companies with extra money they made form you and people don't realize it.

  3. I agree with you that words definitely affect the way we think and act in society. Not only that but it makes us have a distorted view of what is supposed to be right in society, just like how you talk about the roles of male and females. Words are so powerful that we can transmit our values to the next generation and not even be aware of this. This definitely proves that words are very powerful in society.

  4. I strongly agree with you because the invisible narrative can that we do things that we don't want to do, but we do it because we believe that is fine. As the example that you expose about the Costco, everybody have the idea that is the place that sale things very cheap, but doesn't really they only use the invisible narrative for control the mind of people.

  5. I totally agree with you. We all buy things we do not need, but we are so caugh up on the moment and we end up getting it. Next, thing you know that expecific thing we did not needed it ends up somewehere. I think it is a voice inside of our heads saying get it! get it!.

Also, i agree with you this class really changes the way you see things and think about other people's opinions. All, I can say, I am glad i am taking this class with this awesome teacher!
