Jersey Shore

I decided to analyze the television show on MTV that was a hit throughout America and made average and ordinary people into celebrities. The show is called Jersey Shore, and basically I chose this show to analyze because this show has many invisible narratives that are either easily seen by people or not seen at all because of how entertaining the show is.

Now I want to start off with the first invisible narrative of this show that really opens my eyes is the misrepresentation of the culture of Italians. MTV producers strictly and purposely picked a full cast of Italians to take part of this show. What people don't realize is that, for the people that generally don't know about Italians,(for example:the culture, how they talk, what they wear, and etc) are basing their judgement about Italians from this show. Some of the casts are definitely obnoxious, ignorant, and spoiled. Now if I was Italian, I would definitely be embarrassed to watch this show.

Misrepresentation is a huge factor that is a tremendous problem in this show because the Italian culture was slowly being seen in a bad humorous way. For the people that actually care about being Italian should embarrassed by the way MTV purposely misrepresenting their culture just for a hit show.

The last invisible narrative that I would like to go into about Jersey Shore is the actions of youth while having money. This is also very huge because the whole casts are obviously rich and the only thing they generally do on the show is get intoxicated and go to the clubs and basically repeat this cycle every night. This characterizes the youth of our American culture to be spoiled and reckless with the power of money. And of course, this is an entertaining thing to watch by many Americans across the United States.

  1. I totally agree with you here. I feel like the younger generation in our society are the ones who aren't able to grasp this concept yet, but I'm sure many people out there evidently see the stereotypes in our tv shows, and jersey shore is the number one on that list.

  2. I totally agree with you in the first Invisible Narrative you described about the show. I believe that T.V shows should be more careful on how they represent different kind of cultures with their shows. I feel like they just give viewers lies about who ever they are trying to represent. I believe they should be more real, make things more attractive by showing reality. Now with your second invisible narrative you identified I don't agree that much since, I have read, real stats and articles that show how white kids with money actually act and behave that way since everything is given to them, am not saying all of them do, but the show shows kind of what it actually is. In addition I agree with you since it is not about generalizing everyone instead is about being specific.

  3. This post is definitley agreeable and I could tell a lot of people can relate. This is a perfect show that implies stereotypes without the viewers even knowing. It seems more of a entertainment, but it's really stereotypical. Great post!

  4. It's funny you say that because personally this show is stupid as hell but it was just a funny show that would amuse me! Personally I didn't feel like they represented the general Italian population. I just saw this show as comedy and didn't really take anything to heart because I know that it the italians aren't all "Guidos" those are like the modern american Italians.

  5. to be honest i loved this show! Well you know we love what isnt good for us... but just like everyone else i am a product of my environment and i watch what is trending and JS was trending at the time. Although in simple terms it was a stupid show. I hella agree with the fact that cultures are often misrepresented within TV and no one even catches on.
